The Lineage of the Bow

Viking bows were typically longbows crafted from local woods — yew, ash and elm — shaped in the simple self bow tradition. Archaeological finds including the Hedeby bow confirm a tradition of powerful, well-crafted instruments suited to both hunting and warfare.

Norse archery existed within a culture that valued skill with every weapon. The archer who could strike a target from a longship in moving water or hunt elk through dense Scandinavian forest was a valued member of any Norse expedition.

The bow was not the weapon of the Norse warrior. It was the weapon of the Norse hunter. And the hunter fed the warrior.
