Archaeological Structural Types
Rather than a single uniform design, Ancient Rus finds reveal two primary structural classifications adapted from steppe nomad technology into local East Slavic martial culture:
- Hungarian Type: The most prominent structural classification among Ancient Rus finds, featuring elongated bone and antler bone laths at the grip and tips.
- Pechenegian (Turkic) Type: Documented in 10th-century warrior graves, reflecting Eastern influence adapted for forest-steppe combat.
- Composite Materials: Built around a carved wooden core (kibit’), reinforced with bone/antler bone laths, bound with sinew, and wrapped in protective birch bark.
- Strung Silhouette: Forms a smoothed “M” shape profile when strung, rather than the deeply hooked or sharply curled tip curvature of later Mongolian or Ottoman flight bows.
