The Lineage of the Bow

From the short, powerful bows of the Plains nations designed for hunting buffalo on horseback, to the longer bows of woodland cultures adapted for forest hunting, Native American bow making reflects an extraordinary depth of ecological knowledge and craft tradition.

Each regional tradition developed its own approach to materials, design and shooting technique. The knowledge of how to select, prepare and shape a bow was passed from generation to generation as a fundamental survival skill and cultural practice.

The land teaches the bowyer. The bowyer teaches the bow.

My philosophy is rooted in the balance of respect. Respect for the natural wood, respect for the ancient geometry of the horse bow, and respect for the modern archer's need for consistency. Every limb is shaped by hand, every riser is polished until the soul of the wood reveals itself."
