AERODYNAMIC EXCELLENCE

The Science of Menzil

Delve into the specialized world of Turkish flight archery. By isolating sheer distance as the ultimate metric, Ottoman archers developed extreme technical innovations that shattered the boundaries of traditional ballistics.

Defining the Flight Bow

The Ottoman flight bow is an uncompromising feat of engineering. Much shorter and thicker than target bows, its highly reflexed limbs are designed strictly to store maximum energy and impart it instantly to extremely lightweight arrows. This rapid energy transfer is key to overcoming aerodynamic drag.

FLIGHT METRICS

RECORD 846m (Tozkoparan İskender)
DRAW WEIGHT 100-130 lbs
THE ARROW

Pişrev & Vargı

Flight arrows are meticulously crafted from lightweight pine, tapered perfectly in a barrel shape to reduce paradox and drag. The tiny, low-profile fletchings are made from parchment to cut through the air with minimal friction.

THE OVERDRAW

The Siper

To draw a 24-inch arrow back to 28 inches or more, archers use a tortoise-shell or horn groove strapped to the bow hand. This ‘siper’ acts as a shelf, allowing the arrow point to come well inside the bow’s belly, drastically increasing power stroke.

CONDITIONING

Kepaze Training

Before ever shooting an arrow, an Ottoman archer undergoes rigorous conditioning with a ‘kepaze’ (a low-weight training bow), performing thousands of draws to develop specialized back muscles and perfect skeletal alignment.

HISTORICAL BENCHMARKS

The Masters of Okmeydanı

15th Century

Establishment of Okmeydanı

Sultan Mehmed II dedicates the 'Arrow Field' in Istanbul exclusively for archery practice and distance competitions.

1512-1520

Era of Tozkoparan

Tozkoparan İskender sets legendary, unverified records exceeding 846 meters.

1798

Mahmud II

The Sultan, a master archer himself, champions the revival of the sport and sets documented long-distance shots.

“The bow must be like a crescent moon, and the arrow like a shooting star. Only when the mind is empty does the arrow find the horizon.”
— Kemankeş Mustafa Pasha
