The traditional horn bow is a living entity, sensitive to temperature and humidity. Crafting one is an intense, year-long process demanding a profound understanding of natural adhesives and organic material stresses.
The Seasonal Rhythms of Bowyery
Horn bows cannot be built hastily. Because they rely heavily on organic animal glues, the climate must be respected. Sinewing is traditionally done in the crisp, dry air of autumn or winter to prevent spoilage, while curing requires months of controlled temperatures.
BUILD TIME
The Wooden Core
Usually carved from maple, bamboo, or mulberry, the core provides the skeletal structure. It handles very little of the tension or compression, acting primarily as a substrate to hold the horn and sinew together.
Water Buffalo Horn
Sourced from the thickest parts of the horn, these strips are boiled and pressed flat. Glued to the belly facing the archer, horn possesses phenomenal compressive strength, crushing inward as the bow is drawn without snapping.
Layered Sinew
Tendons from the legs or spine of deer and cattle are pounded into fine threads and glued to the back of the bow. Sinew provides incredible tensile strength; as it dries, it shrinks, violently pulling the bow into its characteristic backward ‘C’ shape.

Tying the limbs backward when not in use to maintain reflex.
Warming
Gently heating the bow over a brazier to soften the glues before stringing.
Moisture Control
Protecting the bow from rain and humidity which can dissolve the glue lines.
Tillering
Continuously adjusting the bend of the bow to ensure both limbs work in harmony.
Organic
Every component of a traditional horn bow, down to the sturgeon bladder glue and birch bark backing, is derived directly from nature.
