The blacksmith has always occupied a central role in supporting the martial capacity of the traditional archer, transforming raw ore into the highly specialized tools of range and impact. Forging arrowheads that are both physically balanced and aerodynamically sound requires an intimate, hands-on knowledge of metallurgy, combustion, and heat treatment. A slight error in heating temperature or hammer weight can result in structural flaws that cause the arrowhead to shatter upon impact or veer off course during flight, undermining the archer’s hard-earned accuracy.
Our forge curriculum introduces students to the core physics of ironwork, teaching you to read the color of heated steel and control the anvil rebound. You will practice drawing out, tapering, and socketing metal to construct authentic historical point designs. By understanding the metallurgy of the forge, you gain a deeper appreciation for the physical link between the archer’s bow and the smith’s fire.

Field Points and Broadheads
Different target structures and tactical scenarios historically demanded highly specialized arrowhead designs. Heavy, square-section bodkin points were forged from high-carbon steel specifically to pierce iron armor by concentrating kinetic force, while wide, razor-sharp broadheads were crafted to harvest large game by causing rapid hemorrhage. Students will learn to forge both styles, studying the precise geometry, weight distribution, and socketing techniques required to align the point perfectly with the wooden arrow shaft.
Shaping the Steel
Using the classic combination of hammer and heavy steel anvil, the smith repeatedly heats and strikes the raw steel, aligning its internal molecular structure to ensure maximum strength and long-term edge retention. This process of plastic deformation refines the grain of the metal, eliminating internal pockets of air and stress that could cause failure. Our instructors will guide you through the ergonomics of hammering, showing how to utilize the anvil’s horn and face to shape complex socketed points.
Quenching and Tempering
The highly critical phase of heat-treating the finished steel involves heating the metal to its critical temperature before rapid cooling in oil or water, a process known as quenching. This is followed by controlled reheating, or tempering, to relieve internal stress and balance extreme hardness with structural flexibility. Students will master the visual indicators of tempering colors, ensuring their forged arrowheads are resilient enough to survive high-impact collisions without cracking or bending.

Coal or Charcoal Fire
Operating the forge fire to consistently achieve temperatures exceeding fifteen hundred degrees, which is absolutely necessary to make high-carbon steel malleable enough to shape with hand tools on the anvil.
The Foundation
Mastering the use of the heavy anvil as the primary working surface, utilizing its flat face, rounded horn, and hardy hole to execute complex bending, tapering, and drawing operations on the heated steel.
Precision Grip
Selecting and using the correct style of forging tongs to maintain a secure and highly precise grip on the glowing steel, allowing you to manipulate and hammer the workpiece safely without losing control on the anvil.
