Preparation and Insight
Preparing for an expedition with the Jan Franko Academy requires a deliberate alignment of physical capacity and mental focus. Our programs in Okinawa are demanding, requiring participants to engage in daily training, walks through ancient paths, and periods of quiet meditation. Operating in close collaboration with traditional Okinawan masters, understanding the cultural protocols and local dojo etiquette is paramount. We encourage candidates to review these guidelines to ensure their goals are harmonized with our curriculum.
By addressing travel logistics, visa requirements, and recommended gear before arrival, you free your mind to focus entirely on the training. A successful journey relies on thorough preparation, enabling you to step onto the floor with an open, receptive mind. Logistics & Training
Do I need martial arts experience?
No prior martial arts experience is required to join our programs, as we welcome students of all skill levels. However, since training sessions involve sustained movement, mobility work, and basic conditioning, establishing a baseline of physical fitness beforehand is highly recommended.
Travel Requirements
Before departing, ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay in Japan. Most international participants from visa-exempt countries can enter Japan without a visa for short-term tourist stays of up to ninety days. However, we advise all students to check the latest immigration updates from their local Japanese embassy. The Jan Franko Academy will provide official registration letters and documentation for those requiring structured itineraries or specific visa configurations for educational and training purposes.
What to Bring
Okinawa features a warm, subtropical climate, making light, breathable, and moisture-wicking clothing essential for your daily comfort. For formal dojo training, a traditional martial arts uniform (dogi) will be provided upon arrival. We also recommend packing sturdy trail shoes for outdoor expeditions, a refillable water bottle for hydration, and protective sun gear. A detailed packing checklist will be shared with registered students to ensure you are fully prepared for both classroom sessions and rugged outdoor physical activities.
Accommodation
To ensure a deep cultural connection, participants are accommodated in carefully selected, traditional Ryukyuan-style lodgings. These spaces feature classic tatami flooring, sliding shoji screens, and communal dining rooms where local, nutrient-rich meals are served. The environment is designed to promote quiet contemplation, simplicity, and group cohesion, mirroring the lifestyle of Okinawan martial artists. Modern conveniences are subtly integrated to maintain comfort while preserving the peaceful, historical character of the estate.
“Thorough preparation of the physical body and quiet alignment of the mind constitute the essential forge from which true martial and spiritual mastery can emerge.”— Jan Franko Academy
